The Memo: Batea Oncology Taking a New Mechanical Approach to Glioblastoma

Under the direction of Sonia Martínez Arca, PhD, Batea Oncology is developing what it describes as the first mechanomedicine platform for cancer, beginning with glioblastoma, one of oncology’s deadliest and most treatment-resistant diseases. Rather than relying on traditional pharmacological approaches, the company’s implantable medical device leverages the mechanical behavior of cancer cells to capture them after surgery and improve their response to radiotherapy. As Batea Oncology prepares to begin its first-in-human clinical trial, the company is working to establish an entirely new therapeutic paradigm for solid tumors with high recurrence rates. Origin Story Batea Oncology was founded with a straightforward goal: translate promising laboratory discoveries into therapies capable of improving outcomes for patients facing some of oncology’s greatest unmet needs. “Our motivation to create Batea Oncology was to translate the very promising results obtained in the lab to the patients in...

Medtech M&A Is Clearing Out the Public-Market Middle

On July 27, American Industrial Partners completed its $1.27 billion acquisition of Avanos Medical, taking the pain management and specialty nutrition company private. Two days later, MIMEDX announced an agreement to acquire Sanara MedTech for approximately $350 million, combining two public wound care businesses. One was a private equity buyout. The other was consolidation between two smaller public companies. Together, they point to another development in medtech M&A: remaining independent may be getting harder to justify for companies caught between startup scale and large-cap status. Medtech M&A Activity Is Adding Up In May, we described the medtech M&A environment as active but not yet a boom. Since then, the pace tracked by Compass AI suggests more of the conditions for an acceleration are falling into place. Between May 1 and July 30, Compass AI recorded 13 medtech M&A transactions. Among the disclosed deals were Roche’s $1.05 billion acquisition of PathAI, Med...

RapidPulse: Medtronic’s Next Bet in Stroke

An oversubscribed $48 million Series B announced on July 16th offers a revealing look at where the neurovascular thrombectomy market may be heading. Miami-based RapidPulse is developing a next-generation pulsed-aspiration catheter designed to remove blood clots during acute ischemic stroke. But the most notable part of the financing may be who helped lead it: Medtronic. Rather than waiting for the technology to reach the market, Medtronic invested alongside co-leads TechWald Next and S3 Ventures. SBI Investment and the Florida Opportunity Fund also participated, joining existing investors Santé Ventures , Syntheon, Hatteras Venture Partners, and Epidarex Capital. The financing will support RapidPulse’s TURBO investigational device trial. For an established neurovascular leader, the investment creates an early position in a technology that could become increasingly important to the stroke market. The Numbers Approximately 795,000 strokes occur annually in the U.S., with ischemic strokes...

Wearable Defibrillator Market: Breaking a 20-Year Monopoly

On July 14, Kestra Medical Technologies announced two significant milestones. The company reported $95.1 million in fiscal 2026 revenue, representing 59% year-over-year growth, and secured up to $200 million in non-dilutive financing from Pharmakon Advisors. Those announcements represent more than another successful financing. They suggest one of the fastest-growing companies in the wearable defibrillator market now has the resources to challenge one of medtech’s longest-standing competitive positions. For nearly two decades, ZOLL’s LifeVest has dominated the wearable cardioverter defibrillator (WCD) category. Kestra’s accelerating commercial performance, combined with substantial non-dilutive capital, signals that the market may finally be entering a new phase. The Wearable Defibrillator Market Is Becoming Competitive Wearable cardioverter defibrillators provide temporary protection for patients at elevated risk of sudden cardiac death. Patients recovering from a heart attack or newly...
